Introduction

Steel, being an alloy of iron and carbon, is a widely used metal across diverse industries due to its robustness and versatility. However, it is more sensitive to corrosion and rust. Plating on steel emerges as a crucial process to enhance its durability and functionality. Alfa Chemistry is a renowned company in the plating industry, which has been a pioneer in providing high-quality plating solutions for various materials, including steel.

Generally, there are three types of steel, and each type requires specific plating techniques to ensure optimal results.

  • Low-carbon steel: comprising a carbon content ranging from 0.04% to 0.30%, it is commonly used for various structural applications.
  • Medium-carbon steel: with a higher carbon content (0.30% to 0.60%), it is harder and more resistant.
  • High-carbon steel: with a carbon content exceeding 0.60%, it is exceptionally strong and brittle.

Methods for Plating On Steel

Two methods are used for plating on steel: electroplating and electroless plating.

The process of electroplating on steel involves cleaning the steel surface and immersing it in an electrolytic solution with the desired plating material. Electricity is then applied to facilitate the deposition of the plating material on the steel.

Additionally, electroless plating can be used, where the plating material is chemically deposited on the steel surface without the need for an external power source. This technique ensures uniform and protective coatings on steel components.

Metals for Plating on Steel

The choice of metal for plating depends on the intended application and the desired characteristics of the plated steel product. Various metals can be utilized to enhance the properties of steel components. The following are common examples:

Chrome

Most forms of steel feature low resistance to corrosion and impact, which can severely affect the long-term basis of steel. Hard chrome plating can help with these problems, which will drastically increase a steel component's performance in environments with low moisture and reduced air circulation.

Nickel

In comparison with chrome plating, nickel plating on steel boasts higher hardness and corrosion resistance.
