Chrome Plating Intermediates

Introduction

Chromium plating refers to the act of plating chromium on other metals as a coating. There are two kinds of chrome plating. The first one is for decoration, with bright appearance, good abrasion resistance, and rust prevention ability is not as good as galvanized; the second one is to increase the hardness and wear resistance of metal parts, which is the function of the parts. Due to the excellent performance of the chrome layer, it occupies an extremely important position in the electroplating industry and is listed as one of the three major types of plating.

Application

  • Protective decorative chromium plating

Utilizing the passivation ability, good chemical stability and reflection ability of the chrome plating layer, the chrome layer and copper, nickel and copper-tin alloys form a protective and decorative system, which is widely used in automobiles, bicycles, sewing machines, clocks, instruments, daily use hardware and other components not only keep the product surface bright and beautiful, but also achieve the purpose of protection. The thickness of such coatings is generally 0.25µm-1µm.

  • Hard chromium plating (wear-resistant chromium)

The chrome layer has high hardness and low friction coefficient, and the mechanical parts can be plated with hard chrome to improve their wear resistance and prolong their service life. Hard chromium is used in cutting and drawing tools, dies, bearings, shafts, gauges, gears, etc. of various materials, and can also be used to repair the size of worn parts. The thickness of this type of chromium layer varies from 1µm to several mm as needed.

  • Milky chrome

The coating is milky white, low gloss, good toughness, low porosity, soft color, lower hardness than hard chromium and decorative chromium, but high corrosion resistance, so it is often used in measuring tools and instrument panels. In order to improve its hardness, the milky white coating can be coated with another layer of hard chromium, that is, the so-called double-layer chromium coating, which has the characteristics of both milky white chromium plating and hard chromium plating, and is often used to coat parts that require both wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

  • Loose hole chrome plating

The loose hole treatment is carried out after hard chromium plating to deepen and widen the reticular cracks of the coating. This kind of coating has the ability to store lubricating oil, which can improve the surface friction and wear performance of parts, and is often used for sliding friction under high pressure, such as internal combustion engine cylinder inner wall, piston ring and so on.

  • Black chrome

Compared with other black coatings, it has higher hardness, good wear resistance and heat resistance, and has excellent matting properties. Commonly used in the coating of optical instruments, aviation instruments and other parts. In addition, black chrome plating is also available for decoration.
